GETTING STARTED6 MIN READ

A good place to begin

Security starts with
the setup.

A Ledger signer is designed to keep your private keys offline while you use supported digital assets. Your device and Ledger Live work together: the device lets you review and approve actions, while the app helps you manage accounts and view balances. The first setup is also when you create the recovery phrase that can restore access if your device is lost or damaged.

Before opening the box, choose a calm, private place and set aside a few minutes. Use only a device you purchased through Ledger or an authorized retailer, and download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Avoid links in unsolicited messages, search advertisements or direct messages. A legitimate support agent will never need your recovery phrase, and neither Ledger Live nor a website should ask you to type it in.

Your setup, step by step

Four steps. Take them in order.

01 — 04
01

Check your device and get the official app

Unbox your Ledger and look for clear signs that it may have been tampered with. A new device should guide you through creating a PIN and generating a new recovery phrase; it should not arrive with a prewritten phrase or ask you to use one supplied by someone else. On your computer or phone, visit ledger.com/ledger-live directly and follow the download instructions for your operating system. Confirm that the app identifies your genuine Ledger device before continuing.

02

Create a PIN and write down your recovery phrase

Follow the prompts on the device itself to choose a PIN and generate your phrase. Write the words, in the exact order shown, on the recovery sheet or another durable offline medium. Check every word before you confirm it on the device. Store the phrase privately, away from cameras, cloud storage and anyone who could access it. It is the master backup to your wallet: anyone who gets it may be able to control your assets. Never photograph it, enter it into a computer or share it—not even with someone claiming to be Ledger Support.

03

Install the apps for the networks you use

Open Ledger Live and connect your device to add accounts for the networks you need. A device has limited app storage, so you can uninstall an app later without removing its accounts or assets; reinstall it when you need it again. Make sure you choose the right network for each asset. Names can look similar, but addresses and networks are not always interchangeable. If you are unsure, pause and check Ledger's official support resources before proceeding.

04

Receive a small test amount first

To receive, open the relevant account in Ledger Live, request an address and compare the address shown in the app with the one displayed on your Ledger screen. Approve only when they match. When sending assets, verify the recipient address, network and amount on the device display before approving. Consider sending a small test transfer first and wait for it to arrive before moving a larger amount. Blockchain transactions are generally irreversible, and network fees and processing times vary.

Keep this close

Your recovery phrase is for recovery only.

Never type it into a website, app, chat or support ticket. Treat unexpected instructions to “verify,” “sync” or “unlock” your wallet as a warning sign. If anything feels unusual, stop, disconnect and reach Ledger Support through its official website.

Good questions to ask

Frequently asked questions

What is a Ledger recovery phrase?

It is a set of words generated by your device that acts as a backup to restore access to your accounts. Keep it offline and private. Anyone who obtains it could gain access to your assets.

Does Ledger ever ask me to share my recovery phrase?

No. Do not give the phrase to anyone or enter it into a website or computer, including someone claiming to be support. Only enter device setup information directly on the Ledger device when its screen instructs you.

What if I already have a recovery phrase?

If you are restoring an existing wallet, use the device's official recovery process and carefully follow the on-device instructions. Never use a phrase provided by a seller or another person. If you are uncertain about its source or security, consult official Ledger Support before moving assets.

Can I uninstall an app from my Ledger device?

Yes. Uninstalling a network app frees device storage and does not delete the blockchain account itself. You can install the app again later through Ledger Live. Always check the network and asset details before using an account.

Why should I verify an address on my device?

Your device screen is the trusted place to review transaction details before approval. Comparing the recipient address shown on the device with the address you intend to use can help catch mistakes or malicious changes.

Where can I get help with setup?

Visit the official Ledger Support website and search for your device model or setup question. Never follow a support link sent unexpectedly or share your recovery phrase while asking for help.
